Microneedling with Exosomes

Regents Park Aesthetics, London

I have been going to Regents Park Aesthetics for a number of years now, primarily for Botox and filler injections.

Although Defy Age is frequently offered complimentary treatments at other clinics, I seldom, if ever, take advantage of this.

I have long come to the conclusion that visiting the same practitioner, who is a health professional with their own dedicated practice, delivers the best results.

The Regents Park Aesthetics clinic was founded by an actual nurse, Kay Greveson, who is very much hands-on, even though she has expanded to the Caribbeans, with a clinic in Antigua, and a second UK clinic in Berkhamsted.

Kay is an artist when it comes to administering Botox and fillers and offers a truly bespoke service, sculpting each face individually, as opposed to taking the standard conveyor belt approach of the countless other clinics and facilities out there.

This, however, is a review of a different procedure: Microneedling with Exosomes.

Kay suggested the procedure for treating the fine lines in the tricky area around the mouth: the perioral wrinkles, known as smoker’s lines that develop even if you are not smoker, both around the upper and lower lip and around the chin.

The procedure has minimal downtime, which was my main requirement.

What is Microneedling?

Most people who invest in their appearance are more or less familiar with the term, all the more so as home devices, marketed by various social media “influencers” have been popularised in recent years.  While these devices can be used in between clinic treatments, they are no substitute for the latter.

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves creating tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin using a device fitted with fine needles. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing process, which includes increased collagen and elastin production. This process improves skin texture, minimizes fine lines, and reduces the appearance of scars and enlarged pores.

What are Exosomes?

Graphic representation of exosomes

Exosomes are  tiny nanoparticles derived from stem cells that act as communication messengers between cells. They are rich in growth factors, peptides, cytokines, and other bioactive molecules that promote cellular repair, reduce inflammation, and enhance skin regeneration.

When used in conjunction with Microneedling, the small punctures in the skin allow for the exosomes to be absorbed, spurring production of new collagen and elastin and quicker healing of the injured area.

Exosomes amplify the benefits of microneedling by delivering these potent factors directly to the treated areas, accelerating and optimizing the skin’s healing and rejuvenation.

The Procedure : what you can expect

The face is thoroughly cleaned and a gel anaesthetic is applied for 15 minutes. This minimises the discomfort which is marginal. It feels exactly like what it is: multiple needles puncturing your skin simultaneously. As each area is treated, the exosome product is applied in order to allow instant penetration through the tiny punctures. The micro-channels created during the procedure allow these regenerative molecules to penetrate deeply into the skin layers.

At the end of the procedure, you are given two tubes of topical applications that will act to close the skin punctures in the space of 3-4 days.

Expect some redness and swelling, especially in the area around the eyes (yes, this was treated, just below and along the orbital bone).

Expect all facial lines to be accentuated: you will look more wrinkled than usual, which is disconcerting but TEMPORARY.

Microneedling causes an increase in trans epidermal water loss – basically, moisture evaporation. The skin gets extra-dehydrated, emphasising the fine lines until lost hydration is recovered. Drink a lot of water to remedy this.

Day 3 and 4

Expect some dead skin sloughing off. It can be removed gently with a face glove and a mild face wash.

Apply sunscreen religiously each time you go out.

The science behind the procedure

Benefits of Microneedling with Exosomes

  1. Enhanced Skin Rejuvenation
Combining microneedling with exosomes significantly accelerates and enhances the skin’s healing and repair process. This leads to improved skin texture, tighter pores, and a more radiant complexion.
  2. Anti-Aging Effects
The procedure stimulates collagen and elastin production, which helps reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. The growth factors in exosomes also combat oxidative stress, further slowing the aging process.
  3. Reduction of Scars and Hyperpigmentation
Microneedling alone is effective for treating acne scars and hyperpigmentation. When paired with exosomes, the results are faster and more pronounced due to the regenerative properties of the exosomes.
  4. Minimal Downtime
While traditional resurfacing treatments may require significant downtime, microneedling with exosomes involves minimal recovery time, making it an excellent option for busy individuals.
  5. Suitable for All Skin Types
Unlike some laser treatments, this procedure is safe for a wide range of skin types and tones.

Microneedling with exosomes is a transformative treatment that combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with the advanced regenerative properties of exosomes. It offers a non-invasive, effective solution for improving skin health and appearance over a period of time.

Results appear after a week to 10 days and skin condition continues to improve.
